This Month’s Special Guests

Larry Weinstein is no stranger to Toronto Ravel. This month, Larry brings his 1994 film “September Songs: The Music of Kurt Weill” in a stunning new restoration.

The film is a fusion of film, theatre and concert performance that reimagines the music of Weill whose songs bridged opera, cabaret and popular music with piercing social and emotional insight. With appearances by such artists as Lou Reed, Betty Carter, Charlie Haden, Elvis Costello and more, the film blends stylized “documentaries”, evocative imagery and cinematic transitions that transform Weill’s haunting melodies and biting social commentary into a contemporary meditation on art, exile, and the human condition. We are grateful to Larry for the opportunity to view this important work.

Judith Lander has experienced a renaissance of sorts recently as the pre-eminent interpreter of Kurt Weill’s music. This past summer she performed “Pirate Jenny” (Threepenny Opera) at the ROM’s Holocaust exhibit.

Judith was born in Winnipeg to a household steeped in art, education and social purpose. At 18 she left for Toronto to study Radio and Television Arts at Ryerson College. In 1968 she drew national attention with her performance in “Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris”. Later in New York she starred in “Berlin to Broadway” with Kurt Weill himself. There she met and was mentored by Weill’s wife Lotte Lenya, with whom she maintained a lifelong friendship. By the mid 1970s, Judith was composing dance-theatre collaborations, and by 1980 was balancing motherhood, composition, performance and vocal coaching, which she continues to do to this day.

Judith will be performing three Kurt Weill songs live for us, with our own Fern Lindzon (Judith’s favourite accompanist) at the piano.

WE WILL BW MEETING IN THE LIVING ROOM, NOT SOUTHERN CROSS FOR THIS MEETING ONLY

NEW ADVENTURES IN LISTENING – Film clips from “On The Waterfront” and “Ryan” are posted on the “Study Materials” page for download. With the sound removed, they can be scored as an exercise, and brough in to “Adventures in Listening” for feedback and analysis. Adventures in Listening is a unique opportunity to get unbiased and honest feedback on your ‘in-progress’ or experimental work from a community of your professional peers. Because it is anonymous, it is a risk-free environment.  Whether you are an emerging composer or an experienced one, and whether your work is for concert or screen, I encourage you to take advantage of this invaluable resource.

——–
Many of you are actively performing musicians or are composers with TV shows or films containing your original scores. If you would like me to mention upcoming concerts or showtimes, please see me during the first hour, and I will make the announcement during “Adventures in Listening”. This way we can get the word out while preserving the relaxed and casual atmosphere that we have created at Toronto Ravel.
